BATON ROUGE, La. - The Louisiana Department of Education today launched Believe and Include, a $4 million competitive grant program that will provide funding to schools to develop innovative programs that help students with disabilities achieve proficiency of the more rigorous Common Core State Standards.

Applications for Believe and Include are due September 15, and grant recipients will be announced in October. Each grant application must include at least three partner schools.

"During the last decade, Louisiana has raised student achievement among students with disabilities," said White. "Last year, nearly three times as many students with disabilities were reading on grade level in 8th grade based on state assessments, compared to 2001. But much more needs to be done to close the achievement gap for students with disabilities."

I. Overview
The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) is soliciting applications for Believe and Include, a grant
program through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that will provide funding to schools to
develop innovative programs that:
• Increase academic performance for students with disabilities.
• Prepare students with disabilities to thrive on Common Core State Standards assessments.
This proposal – Believe and Include – represents an effort to drive achievement by empowering our district leaders, school
leaders, and special education teachers to innovate special education in our state.
II. Believe and Include Guidelines
Believe and Include will be administered by the LDOE’s Office of Student Programs for the purpose of assisting
schools with designing and implementing innovative programs reduce the achievement gap between regular
education student and students with disabilities.
III.Program Priorities and Goals
All programs must be scalable to additional campuses and sustainable through other sources of funding after
the expiration of the grant.
