Integrating Educational Apps and Classroom Lessons for Students with Autism and Special Needs
"A new chapter may bring autism educational apps to a lesson plan near you.
Educational Apps have been showing great success with many students with special needs and autism. They are motivating learning tools. Although, the numbers of users of mobile tablets are increasing by the hour, most educators and parents are struggling with where to start when it comes to choosing apps.
AutismClassroom.com’s book, Lesson Ideas and Activities for Young Children with Autism and Related Special Needs: Activities, Apps and Lessons for Joint Attention, Imitation, Play, Social Skills & More (2010), matches apps to the actual instructional lesson. The book already provided teachers and parents with over 100 starting points and beginning places for creating meaningful activities for pre-school and elementary-aged students with autism and related special needs. Each theme unit provided activity based ideas specific to Joint Attention, Imitation Skills, Communication, Self-Help Skills, Independent Skills, Pre-Vocational Skills, Social Skills, Play Skills, Sensory Involvement, Basic Concept Mastery, Vocabulary/Literacy, Fine Motor, and Gross Motor. However, just recently, the newly added “Apps” chapter highlights ten educational apps in each skill area. The over 100 highlighted apps can be easily incorporated into lessons and activities for young children with autism and special needs."

About the HELP Committee
The committee began in 1869 as the Committee on Education and in 1884 through the mid-1900s it was known as the Education and Labor Committee. In 1999, then Chairman James Jeffords of Vermont, worked to officially name it the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.
Today the Committee is led by Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Ranking Member Mike Enzi (R- WY) and is comprised of 23 Senators; 13 Democrats and 10 Republicans. Under their leadership, the Committee is composed of three subcommittees, which have a broad jurisdiction over our country's health care, education, employment and retirement policies.
Today the Committee is led by Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Ranking Member Mike Enzi (R- WY) and is comprised of 23 Senators; 13 Democrats and 10 Republicans. Jurisdiction
Rule 25, of the Standing Rules of the Senate, States the Committee's Jurisdiction to be the following: Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, to which committee shall be referred all proposed legislation, messages, petitions, memorials, and other matters relating to the following subjects:
1. Measures relating to education, labor, health, and public welfare.
2. Aging.
3. Agricultural colleges.
4. Arts and humanities.
5. Biomedical research and development.
6. Child labor.
7. Convict labor and the entry of goods made by convicts into interstate commerce.
8. Domestic activities of the American National Red Cross.
9. Equal employment opportunity.
10. Gallaudet University, Howard University, and Saint Elizabeth hospital.
11. Individuals with disabilities.
12. Labor standards and labor statistics.
13. Mediation and arbitration of labor disputes.
14. Occupational safety and health, including the welfare of miners.
15. Private pension plans.
16. Public health.
17. Railway labor and retirement.
18. Regulation of foreign laborers.
19. Student loans.
20. Wages and hours of labor

The Chairman
Senator Tom Harkin has represented Iowa in Congress for 35 years. First winning election to the U.S. House in 1974, he represented Iowa's Fifth Congressional District until 1984, when he challenged an incumbent Senator and won. Iowans returned him to the Senate in 1990, 1996, 2002 and 2008, making Tom Harkin the first Iowa Democrat to win a fifth term in the U.S. Senate. Finding Evidence Based Programs for Reading and Math
As a special education teacher and tutor, I would like to know what are good reading programs up to high school level?
What about programs for math and writing through all the grades?
We recommend Orton-Gillingham based programs. These programs have over 60 years of research that supports their effectiveness and they work for everyone.
It’s hard to understand why schools resist using them.
Orton-Gillingham
based programs include Wilson and Slingerland. Lindamood-Bell is also good.Direct Instruction

Here’s a “one stop shopping” resource that will answer some of your questions about evidence based reading and math programs at different education levels.
Find out which educational programs have been successfully evaluated in valid research

Not many math programs have solid research to support them.
