Loughborough University Ph.D. Researcher Ann Browning in her own words:

I am the mother of four young adults aged 17-23 who are my greatest achievement to date. I developed an interest in special educational needs and developmental disabilities through having a son (now 21) who experienced particular difficulties within social and educational environments. I obtained work within the youth justice system and through this I gained an insight into the difficulties which young people with developmental disabilities experience when they become involved in the criminal justice system and this inspired me to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology at Birmingham City University, UK (BCU) at the age of 43.
I graduated in 2009 with a First Class BA Honours degree and was the recipient of ‘The Birmingham City University School of Social Sciences Annual Award 2009’ for excellent achievement throughout the programme and my undergraduate studies included a thesis entitled ‘Young offenders with Asperger syndrome: to what extent can the criminal justice response be considered appropriate’. I remained at BCU to complete a Masters degree in Criminology for which I was awarded a distinction. In my MA thesis, under the supervision of Dr Laura Caulfield, I expanded upon the research undertaken for my undergraduate thesis.




In 2010 I was awarded an ESRC 1 +3 PhD Studentship (scholarship) in the Social Sciences Department at Loughborough University UK, and began a Masters in Social Science Research (MRes). This time my thesis research focussed upon the ethical issues associated with undertaking research with especially vulnerable participants and was entitled: ‘Enabling the voices of doubly-vulnerable children and young people: the implications of ethical scrutiny’ for which I was the recipient of ‘The Loughborough University Department of Social Sciences Award’ for excellent achievement and the highest thesis mark on the MRes programme and a distinction for the MRes. Whilst undertaking the MRes programme I delivered a lecture entitled ‘Young Offenders: the assessment and management of risk’ as part of the Criminology and Social Policy BSc module ‘Children, Young people and risk’ for the Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough University.


In 2011, I began my PhD research under the supervision of Professor Jo Aldridge, this focuses upon the experiences of young autistic people who encounter the criminal justice system and will aim to:
1) Examine the criminal justice experiences of young autistic suspects, defendants and offenders in the UK
2) Investigate the existence of transitional issues arising as young people are transferred from youth to adult justice services
3) Explore the methodological complexities of undertaking research with young autistic participants in forensic settings and develop appropriate research strategies


I have recently provided an online lecture entitled ‘Suspects, defendants and offenders with autism: to what extent can the criminal justice response be considered appropriate?’ for the Coventry University Pg.Cert in ‘Contemporary Perspectives in Intellectual Disability, Mental Disorder and Forensic Practice’.


My wider interests include critical disability studies, criminology; penology; research ethics; the social model of disability; universal design; youth crime; media representations of offending behaviour and children’s voices.

The American Psychiatric Association has released their DSM-5 proposed criteria for autism spectrum disorder. Does eliminating subtypes such as Asperger's make autism diagnoses more precise, or does it rob individuals of their self-identity?
